【摘要】:Thisguideprovidesinformationonmethodsthatcanassistthedesignandconservationprofessionalintheselectionanduseofconsolidantsforstone.Useofaconsolidantshouldbeconsideredonlyafterdevelopingathoroughunderstandingofallfactorscontributingtothedeteriorationofthestone.Suchanunderstandingisbestreachedthroughacomprehensivesurveyofexistingconditions,environment,andadefinitionofstoneperformancerequirements,followedbylaboratoryanalysisofthestoneanditsdeteriorationproducts.Withthisinformationitshouldbepossibletoidentifythedecaymechanismsandtodevelopaconservationplanforthestone.However,carefulpreliminaryinvestigationmayindicatethatconsolidationisaninappropriatetreatment.DecayMechanisms8212;Adiscussionofdecaymechanismsisbeyondthescopeofthisdocument;however,anunderstandingofdecaymechanismsiscriticaltotheevaluationandselectionofappropriatetreatmentmethodsforstoneincludingchemicalconsolidation.(SeeBibliographyforreferences.)Stoneconsolidationshouldonlybedoneaspartofanoverallconservationplan.Consolidatingstonewithoutresolvingunderlyingproblemscontributingtoitsdeterioration(suchasrisingdamporimproperdrainage)cancausetheconsolidationtreatmenttofailcompletelyortoacceleratetherateofdeteriorationofthestone.Theconditionofthestoneshouldbedocumentedbeforeandaftertreatment.Pastexperiencehasshownthatapplicationofsomeconsolidantsmaycontributetodeteriorationorcreateunanticipatedproblems.Insomecases,itmaynotbeappropriatetouseastoneconsolidantatall.Consolidationshouldbeconsideredonlyafterunsuccessfulattemptstoremoveormodifydegradationsourceshavebeencarriedout.Considerationshouldbegiventothefactthatconsolidationofporousstoneisanirreversibleprocess.Consolidantsthatallowfutureretreatmentshouldbeselectedifpossible.Forexample,treatmentofstone,particularlyporousstone,withhydrophobicmaterialsmaynotallowfutureretreatmentwithwater-basedconsolidants.Noconsolidantshouldbeusedthatpreventsorsignificantlyretardswatervapormigrationthroughthestone.1.1Thisguidecoversproceduresfortheselectionanduseofconsolidantsforpreservationofstone.1.2Whenconsideringtheuseofstoneconsolidants,guidancefromspecialistsexperiencedinstoneconservationshouldbesought.Whereworkonfeaturesofartistic,architectural,culturalorhistoricalimportanceisbeingconsidered,guidancefromspecialistsinthesefieldsshouldbesought.Historicpreservationguidelinesshouldbeconsideredinplanningthework.1.3Thisguideoffersanorganizedcollectionofinformationoraseriesofoptionsanddoesnotrecommendaspecificcourseofaction.Thisdocumentcannotreplaceeducationorexperienceandshouldbeusedinconjunctionwithprofessionaljudgment.Notallaspectsofthisguidemaybeapplicableinallcircumstances.Thisguideisnotintendedtorepresentorreplacethestandardofcarebywhichtheadequacyofagivenprofessionalservicemustbejudged,norshouldthisdocumentbeappliedwithoutconsiderationofaproject''smanyuniqueaspects.1.4Limiteddescriptionoftestsareprovidedforinformationalpurposesonly.Seethereferencedstandardforcompletedescription.1.5Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitesaretoberegardedasstandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareprovidedforinformationonlyandarenotconsideredstandard.1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheusertoconsultappropria......
